I have found the OH1 to be within 1-2 beats of my Polar H10 and highly responsive. The best part is that you can wear it almost anywhere if you use the swimming clip and wrap it around you with any strap it will fit onto. I wear it on my forehead and forget to even take it off sometimes since you barely notice you are wearing it. Awesome product.

I have only worn this on hikes, runs and jiu jitsu sparring. If you use the arm strap and place it on the inside of your bicep it is pretty comfortable and after a while you forget it is there. It is a bit fidgety to use at first especially trying to turn it on and off, also the app is a little clunky and you can accidentally lose your data quite easily. Now that I’m used to it, it’s effortless to use, just turn on, open the app and press start. I haven’t tried it in the water yet, my son is a club swimmer so I’ll let him give it a good try out. Posted a screenshot of info from a 2 hour Jiu jitsu session. It’s good value for money, build quality is robust and comfortable to wear and easy to charge with good battery life. Would recommend.

Background: my Apple Watch series 4 often does not record my heart rate (no readings for 4 out of my last 10 runs), and sometimes reads impossibly high, over 200 bpm max, and 180+ bpm average (I’m too old and not pushing hard enough for such readings). For resting heart rate, the Apple Watch is fine. And while cycling, I dislike wearing chest straps, because it’s too cold to put on on a chilly morning, and it often feels like it is slipping. I bought the Polar OH1+ to use standalone (not paired to anything) while running, and to use paired to my Garmin Edge 510 while cycling.

Notes: 1) Although the material indicates that it comes with a goggles clip for swimming, there are actually two of them of different sizes in the box. 2) There are 3 different apps you may need — if you use it unpaired and upload the data to your phone, then you need Polar Beat on your phone and a Polar Flow account on their website; if you use it paired to a watch or cycling computer and upload the data to your phone, then you need Polar Flow on your phone; if you upload the data to your PC with their USB dongle, and not through your phone or watch, then you need a Polar Flow account on their website, and Polar FlowSync on your PC. 3) None of the apps tell you how much battery life remains — you have to rely on the LED color and blinking pattern. 4) It doesn’t pair with the Apple Watch.

Although figuring out which apps I needed was a bit confusing, the Polar OH1+ is just so much more convenient to wear, works well and is just as accurate as chest straps (see https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/03/polar-oh1-plus-optical-hr-sensor-in-depth-review.html for a detailed review).

UPDATE: I was ultimately able to get in touch with Polar. Mailed the monitor back to them and got it back fairly quickly. Not sure whether they repaired my defective one or replaced it. Have had no issues since the warranty honored – so upping my rating from one star. Definitely far prefer arm to a chest monitor. much more convenient.
    #####################
Over the years i have had nothing but frustration with chest strap heart rate monitors, primarily related to the difficulty replacing the battery. Also a hassle / inconvenient getting chest strap on.
So after reading many reviews & getting recommendations from friends, i bought this monitor. For three months, i couldn’t have been happier! Easy to get on / off arm before and after workouts (primarily Zwift rides on my Wahoo KICKR). Fit well even if i was wearing tightfitting long sleeve shirt. Paired easily via Bluetooth with Zwift app. HR data seemed accurate. Knowing that i could track my HR hassle free with this monitor even increased my enthusiasm for my Zwift workouts… And it was great having a rechargeable battery (see below re: THE AGONY of replacing batteries in Polar chest monitors).

Then couple weeks ago, the device suddenly stopped working. At first i thought i had not charged it enough between rides. But after charging again overnight, no difference – green light on indicating battery fully charged – but would not turn on. And then NO RESPONSE from Polar despite contacting their Support online and via email multiple times and providing serial # for hy OH1+. Hence I am giving up now and writing this 1 star review… I really thought i had finally found the perfect heart rate monitor after all these years but I guess now it is back to the drawing board…

P.S. re: chest montiors – i previously had three Polar chest heart rate monitors that worked to varying degrees for varying times. All eventually became unusable because repeated attempts to try to open the back with a coin ground down the plastic so eventually had no way to open to replace the battery.… All still functioning – if i could get a new battery in – but useless once could not put in a replacement battery.

Bought my OH-1 back in July of 2020 after going thru at least 2 Garmin or Wahoo heart monitors a year (battery and strap failures), been nothing but a fantastic little workhorse of a heart rate monitor since then. Drop in the strap, place on the arm and it just works no matter the conditions or activity- no more licking straps, dealing with dead coin cells and corroded contacts. Granted its lost about half its total capacity (from 12hrs to 6hrs) since 2020 then but it’s easy to drop in the cradle and leave plugged in for the next adventure.

When it finally gets under 2 hrs of battery life, it’ll get replaced by whatever is the latest optical HRM from Polar.

  10. Amazon Customer

Using it for a few months now on my runs and bike rides, very consistent – no lapses in monitoring. Gives a good battery life. Polar app gives useful info. Quite satisfied with purchase.
